Description

Albert G. Blanchard Autograph Letter Signed to Earl Van Dorn. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Monroe, Louisiana; July 23, 1862. Great content letter to Van Dorn informing him that he is ready for battle. He writes: "I am in command here, having relieved General Roane. Please let me have your views about attacking the enemy - I have about 1000 men armed with shot guns &c -I shall have in a day or two about 400 mounted 'Partisan Rangers' - The artillery Company has gone on your side to get its guns, but I fear too late, for it is reported that the Yankees have taken the Steam Ferry on the Natchez - If you could make a diversion with the 'Arkansas' & send a force across opposite Vicksburg, could we do anything opposite the mouth of Yazoo? Have you any videttes to the river & how shall I reach them?" Signed, "Albert G. Blanchard / Brig. Gen Com." With a filing docket on the verso.

Blanchard had recently been replaced in his command as well, due to his advanced age. As evidenced by this letter, he remained eager to lead forces in combat.

Condition: Flattened folds. Age toning, with a few foxing spots. Some showthrough from docket on verso. Toning is darker on verso, especially along folds. Small (quarter inch) separation in top fold.

Provenance: From the Private Collection of a Mississippi Gentleman.
