Description
James Buchanan Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 6.5" x 8.75", Wheatland [Pennsylvania]; July 12, 1861. Addressed to Jos. C. G. Kennedy. It reads in part: "I am confident you will pardon me, on recount of my long & severe illness for not having sooner thanked you for the part which you so efficiently took in favor of Weaver. Young Brawly is now with us & I am much pleased with him. He speaks in glowing terms of your kindness I have no news to communicate from the quest retreat. We are all anxiously looking to Washington; but General Scott is wise in not precipitating a forward movement until he shall be fully prepared. With my kind regards to...Dr. Gurley..." Signed, "James Buchanan." There is a biographical annotation about the Dr. Gurley referenced above on the verso.Condition: Two pieces of tape attached on verso. .25" closed tear to right margin. Pencil notation on recto. Lightly rubbed and toned. Smoothed folds.
