Civil War Partial Diary Kept by Andrew J. Early of the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry Together with His Discharge and Carte de Visite. Approximately 40 pages of a small diary with printed dates for the year 1863 measuring 2.75" x 6", with entries made in August 1864 through January 1865. Andrew J. Early mustered into company "H" of the 191st Pennsylvania on June 27, 1864 as a private. His entries are largely undated, using only the day of the week, but he writes "August 1864" early in the diary. His next entry does not include a day, but he writes that he "was on Detail working on the fort on the welden [Weldon] railroad. Was some picket firing on the left at noon was under arms for about 2 hours. All quiet again." The 191st Pennsylvania participated in the fight for Weldon Railroad on August 18 through 21, 1864. Although undated, Early's entries cover this period and make mention of firing and of destroying the railroad. Entries read [punctuation is added for clarity], "friday was in camp and detailed for picket all quiet along lines. Saturday came of picket saw J. B. C... in camp. All quiet along the line. Sunday was detailed to work on the fort on the Welton railroad. Still all quiet along the line. Monday. Was in camp and started to the second corps but did not go. Came back to camp saw JB... All quiet on the line. Tuesday. Went on picket stood ... one hour at a time some scouts firing in front of my post all quiet again. JB C... came to see me as he was going home the next day. Wednesday. Came of[f] picket was some picket firing in the morning & some pickets captured. All quiet again. Was detailed to dig a well for Co. B and J Betall on drill In evening. Thursday. Was in camp. Went on regimental drill in the after all quiet except some cannonading on the right. Sept. 8th 64. A J Early. Friday. Was in camp and drilled three times and dress parade in the evening. All quiet along the line except some cannonading in the right. Saturday. Went on picket. Stood... 2 hours in the night. Heard the Rebs. Chop wood in front. Again all quiet..." Later in the diary, he records: "Saturday. Still Destroying the welden road... in front but a few cavalry. Sunday. Falling back. Enemy following us. Monday. Still falling back. Got into our own lines about 2 oclock..." His last entry is dated January 3, 1865 in which he makes note that he was relieved of picket duty and returned to camp.The diary is accompanied by Early's printed discharge (8.25" x 11") dated June 28, 1865, and a carte de visite of him in uniform, posed standing next to a chair.
Condition: The partial diary lacks a cover and many pages have come loose from the binding. The pages have dark toning and soiling and most are dog-eared with heavy wear. Half of one page has been torn out. The discharge document has toning and soiling, with heavy wear along the folds, resulting in separations at the margins and bits of paper loss. CDV has toning and staining, with a chip and residue affecting the albumen, and a small chip at the top of the mount. The verso has light pitting at bottom.
