Description

George Washington Signed Ship's Passport. Single sheet of vellum, 11.75" x 17"; December 8, 1796. The passport was issued in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to "Brig Thomas Mark Fernald master or commander of the burthen of one hundred thirty one tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with seven men." Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. The passport has not been cut at top in the usual scalloped pattern, hence the engraving is complete. This is passport number 8. Matted and framed to the overall size of 28" x 32.25".

Condition: The vellum has buckling and boasts a bold signature. The blind embossed seal is complete and intact. Heavy wear and chipping to wooden frame.
