[Revolutionary War]. Spy Note Signed "Vivat Republica" with Thomas Jefferson Content. One page, 7.25" x 4.5", circa 1781, no place. The note reads in full: "Intelligence has just arrived that Col. Tarlton [sic] advanced no farther than Dumfries, where he haulted [sic] a while and his courage failing, he has retreated to the camp at Kittlerun; so that Mr. Jefferson may now safely quit Carter's Mountain & return to the seat of government, where probably some derangements have taken place, in the different departments of state during his absence. Vivat republica. (no fish)."No doubt written in the wake of Benedict Arnold's 1781 invasion of Virginia. British General Charles Cornwallis dispatched a cavalry force commanded by Col. Banastre Tarleton to capture Jefferson after he and his assembly fled Richmond to the mountain Jefferson referred to as Montalto. When the General Assembly reconvened in June 1781, it conducted an inquiry into Jefferson's actions which eventually concluded that Jefferson had acted with honor, but he was not re-elected.
Condition: Light toning to paper; scattered small stains; small holes in the intersection of the creases; smoothed fold creases. Paper loss at the top and bottom margins along the vertical fold lines.
