Description

James Thomson. Winter. A Poem. London: Printed for J. Millan... and Sold by J. Roberts... and N. Blandford..., 1726.

Folio (311 x 203 mm). Woodcut title-vignette of an author, woodcut head-pieces and opening initials. Disbound; cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION. Published in March 1726, and priced at one shilling, Winter was the first of Thomson's Seasons to be published. It was produced in larger format than the subsequent installments, and is the rarest of the separate issues of the Seasons, perhaps partly because of its folio format. Summer followed in 1727, Spring in 1728, both in octavo, while Autumn first appeared in the first collected edition of 1730, issued in both quarto and octavo. Thomson continued to add to the four parts, and the definitive edition of his popular and widely influential work only appeared in 1746. The first edition of Winter contains 405 lines, the final version 1069 lines. But, in his Life of Thomson, Johnson expressed a fondness for the original versions of the poem "with which I was acquainted at their first appearance." Although he finds the Seasons "improved in general... I know not whether they have not lost part of what Temple calls their race; a word which, applied to wines... means the flavour of the soil."

Condition: Slight binding remnants along folds, with original stab marks visible at gutters; trimmed close at head (but not affecting any letters or pagination); overall a fine crisp copy.

References: Foxon T211 (citing only 4 copies in the US); Hayward 154; Rothschild 2419.

Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.
