Description

[Jonathan Swift]. A Complete Collection of Genteel and Ingenious Conversation... By Simon Wagstaff. London: Printed [by Samuel Richardson] for B. Motte and C. Bathurst, 1738.

8vo (224 x 133 mm). With preliminary advertisement leaf. Contemporary gilt-ruled calf; quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with Samuel Richardson's Neptune ornament within the headpiece at the beginning of the Introduction on [a]1r. LARGE-PAPER COPY of a work Swift described in a letter to Pope as a "perfection of folly," which he had "begun above twenty-eight years ago.'' He had no intention of putting his name to the title-page, calling it "such a perfection of folly, that you shall never hear of it till it is printed, and then you shall be left to guess'' (Correspondence, ed. Ball, III, p. 291). Mary Barber arranged for publication in London, and the work was printed by the later novelist Samuel Richardson. There were two London editions in 1738, distinguishable by either the Neptune headpiece or the flower basket headpiece on [a]1r.

Condition: Some rubbing and wear to spine and edges; hinges cracked, but holding. Some pale dampstains to lower margins near end; occasional minor soiling. Otherwise, a fine crisp copy.

References: Rothschild 2158; Teerink 761.

Provenance: James Hustler (armorial bookplate, dated 1730); purchased from Ximenes Rare Books, Inc., New York, 28 Jan 1974. From the William A. Strutz Library.
