Description

Samuel Pepys. Memoires relating to the State of the Royal Navy of England, for Ten Years, Determin'd December 1688. [London:] Printed Anno 1690.

8vo (181 x 110 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Pepys by R. White after G. Kneller; title printed in red and black; folding table ("A General State of Account") at page 152. Late 19th-century dark navy morocco, covers paneled in gilt, spine gilt, edges gilt.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, intended for private distribution, with title imprint reading ''Printed Anno MDCXC.'' It was later issued to the general public with a new title containing the publisher's and bookseller's names (Ben. Griffin and Sam. Keble, respectively), and this later issue has not such a fine impression of the portrait, which is here printed on thicker paper. Pepys is usually considered to have reserved the copies of the first issue for presentation. A manuscript note inserted in this copy reads: "This copy on Fine Paper, was no doubt a Present from Samuel Pepys Esqr. Secretary of the Admiralty, to Sir Robert Southwell, Clerk of the Privy Councell, whose arms have been preserved, when rebound in its present state..." The present copy with cancel leaves B7, C2, C4, C6, D6, K2, K3, L6, & L7.

"This is the diarist's only acknowledged publication. Upon this he lavished a great deal of thought and care. It represented a side of Pepys's life which is apt to be ignored" (Pforzheimer). WITH MANUSCRIPT CORRECTIONS IN INK, PROBABLY BY PEPYS HIMSELF, on pages 11, 33, 39, 40, 42, 57, 70, 90, 92, 103, 120, 138, 142, as usually found in this issue. These corrections, if not by Pepys himself, were surely done at his direction (see Notes and Queries, 7th series, VII, p. 81). Additionally, in this copy the word "London" has been added to the imprint in brown ink in a contemporary hand.

Condition: Some minor rubbing or wear to joints, bands and spine extremities; a little wear to lower board edges; a few scuffs or minor abrasions. Dampstain in some lower blank margins near gutter at center from around quire D, with slight associated wrinkling; slight marginal toning.

Provenance: Sir Robert Southwell (his large engraved armorial bookplate; possibly a gift from the author); Scott Library (bookplate). From the William A. Strutz Library.
