John Nash Douglas Bush (1896-1983) was a literary critic and literary historian. Bush taught for most of his life at Harvard University, where his students included many of the most prominent scholars, writers, and academics of several generations. He corresponded with Lewis and shared an interest in Shakespeare and Milton. Bush's textual criticism on Shakespeare and John Milton was widely influential, and his English Literature in the Earlier Seventeenth Century (1945) remains a standard reference work.

This essay was later collected in They Asked For a Paper (1962) and in Selected Literary Essays (1969).

Condition: Some toning at wrapper margins with a few tiny splits or nicks.
