Description
[Edgar Rice Burroughs]. J. Allen St. John (American Artist, 1872-1957). Original illustration in pen, ink, charcoal, and pencil on brown paper. "I rose stealthily from my couch" from Black Pirates of Barsoom. The story and illustration originally appeared in Amazing Stories, June 1941, on p. 8. Signed lower right. Image measures 9 ½ x 7 ¾ inches; 242 x 173 mm (sight). Framed and matted with glass to an overall size of 15 ½ x 13 inches; 396 x 328 mm. A few minor spots of foxing, crease (or repaired tear?) to upper left corner, else near fine. Not examined out of frame (general wear and chipping to frame).St. John illustrated many of Edgar Rice Burroughs' most famous works. In fact, "St. John is widely known as the illustrator of over half of the Burroughs books, starting with The Return of Tarzan in 1915... but his magazine illustrations for Burroughs stories are less familiar," (Heins, p. 259). For the June 1941 issue of Amazing Stories, St. John illustrated the front cover and produced two black-and-white drawings for the Edgar Rice Burroughs story, Black Pirates of Barsoom (see Zeuschner p. 169). The present work is one of the two black-and-white illustrations produced for this story and has been reproduced in Heins (p. 269). Of St. John's illustrations, Edgar Rice Burroughs once wrote, "I am convinced that there is no greater American illustrator than St. John. His pictures perfectly reflect the spirt of the text... As a matter of fact, I look forward to each new book of mine almost solely for the pleasure of studying St. John's pictures," Zeuschner p. 61. From the Albert E. Willis Collection of Edgar Rice Burroughs
