Description
Donnington Castle Plantation. Appraisal and Inventory of Property including "Land, Negroes, and other Slaves and Stock..." Jamaica: May 21 to June 6, 1789. Five pages, consisting of one bifolium and one separate leaf of equal size, 14.75 x 21.5 inches. Manuscript valuation and inventory of the enslaved population of Donnington Castle Plantation. Docketed on page [6]. The document is titled "Valuation of Donnington Castle Plantation, Negroes, Stock, &c., taken by us this 21st of May 1789 at the request of William Mitchell & George Cuthbert Esquires Attornies [sic] to Sir John Dalling Bart." The first four pages consist of a bifolium which is attached at the upper left corner to a separate leaf with binding string.The plantation was located in St. Mary Parish in Jamaica and was owned by Sir John Dalling, 1st Baronet, at this time. Dalling was the acting governor of Jamaica from 1772 to 1774 and governor from 1777 to 1782. The inventory lists approximately two hundred and ninety individuals on the estate and records their names, condition, and occupation. Occupations vary widely and include field laborer, mason, carpenter, washerwoman, cook, basket maker, and "care of children," among many others, with the recorded conditions ranging from young to weakly. An inventory and valuation of the estate's livestock and acreage, signed by John Hiatt and Hector McLean, appears at the bottom of page [3] and continues to page [4]. At the center of page [4] is a separate inventory of twenty enslaved people at "Donnington Castle Penn" dated May 22, 1789. A sworn statement appears on page [5] acknowledging that Hiatt and McLean, acting on the orders of Dalling's attorneys, "were called upon and required...to Value and appraise the Land, Negroes, and other Slaves and Stock of and belonging to the said Plantation, and that they did in compliance with such request make the valuation and appraisement..."
Condition: Split along vertical and horizontal folds, tape repair and reinforcement to said folds on pages [2], [3], and [6]; pinholes along integral fold of bifolium; paper repair at center right edge of page [5] affecting three words of text; minor edgewear throughout. Dampstaining, chiefly to page [6], with light scattered soiling and toning throughout.
[Together with:] Brief manuscript list titled "Name of Proprietors" recording four names with the cumulative total and valuation of the enslaved population belonging to each. One page of a bifolium, 7.875 x 9.75 inches, Jamaica, November 23, 1835 to February 8, 1836. Minute scattered toning and soiling. The documents are housed together in a gilt-lettered custom clamshell case measuring 8.75 x 12.25 inches.
