Description

[Jane Austen]. Sense and Sensibility. London: T. Egerton, 1811. First edition. Three volumes. 12mo. [iv], 317, [1, blank]; [iv], 278; [iv], 301, [1, blank]; watermarked "1808" and "IS / 1810." Half-title pages in Volumes II and III supplied from the second edition, tipped-in, with longer double-rules above and below the title and without the imprint on the verso. Late nineteenth-century binding by Zaehnsdorf; mottled calf decoratively ruled in gilt, brown leather spine labels lettered in gilt, spine elaborately decorated in gilt with five raised bands. Minor edgewear, a touch of wear to head and foot of spines, minor scuffing to boards. Inner dentelles gilt, brown endpapers; minor offsetting to margins, binder's ink stamp and bookseller's ink stamp to the front free endpaper versos; minor discoloration to gilt dentelles. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed and gilt, brown ribbon markers; title pages of Volumes II and III washed removing ink ownership (faintly visible), minor offsetting from ribbon markers, minor thumbsoiling, moderate foxing, text blocks unevenly toned, minor wear to gilt on edges. Very good.

A beautiful copy of this rare set. "The size of the edition has not been recorded. It was undoubtedly a small one, and Henry Austen stated that it was less than that of Mansfield Park, the small size of which had excited the astonishment of John Murray at a later day. Probably it consisted of only 1000 copies or even less, and this would account for the fact that Sense and Sensibility is so much the rarest of the [Austen] novels at present day" (Keynes).

As with much of Austen's other work, this story has been adapted many times over, chiefly for the theatre and television, but once for the silver screen in 1995. The film was directed by Ang Lee and starred Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson, the latter of which also wrote the screenplay. It was a major critical and commercial success, garnering eleven Academy Award nominations, of which it won three, and spearheading a resurgence of popularity for Austen's works.
