Description

[Benjamin Franklin]: 1754 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN newspaper with coverage THE ALBANY CONGRESS, held shortly before the start of the FRENCH and INDIAN WAR. The Pennsylvania Gazette (Philadelphia, PA), June 13, 1754, 4 pgs., 9 1/4" x 14 1/2" (folded). The newspaper contains the "B. Franklin and D. Hall" colophon located at the lower margin of the back page. This issue contains an inside page report of the start of the Albany Congress that was a meeting of representatives from several British North American colonies, primarily to discuss a united defense strategy against the French and to negotiate a treaty with the Iroquois Confederacy. Though primarily focused on immediate defense concerns, the Congress is also notable for the proposal of the Albany Plan of Union, a plan for greater colonial unity under a centralized government.

Condition: Loss, edge roughness. A rare issue nonetheless.
