Description
Abraham Lincoln: Figural Eagle Parade Torch. 8 1/2" x 9 1/2" gilded brass eagle, in the round, with two burners, attached to mounting bracket. Long considered a Lincoln campaign item, recent research has led us to confirm the attribution, but refine it somewhat. We no longer believe it dates from 1860, but rather 1864, carried by the Republican marching club known as the "War Eagles" (perhaps inspired by the mascot of a Wisconsin regiment, "Old Abe", the "War Eagle"). This is one of the nicer examples we have seen. It has all the original components. It has only one small indentation on one side. None of the seams are split. It has much of the original finish. There are some scattered spots of corrosion or verdigris and the mounting bracket is rusted. Overall, though, quite nice! From the Warren G. Lee Collection.Auction Info
