Description
How does an astronaut eat in space? With a spoon, of course.
Apollo 13 Flown Engraved Spoon from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander James Lovell. This 6.75" long Community Stainless tablespoon is engraved on the handle, "James A. Lovell, Jr./ LM - 7 CDR" to the right of an engraved NASA logo. It is in a 2.5" x 8" plastic pouch with a piece of Velcro on the back, also flown on the mission. Eating in space made a giant leap forward during the Apollo era as they had the luxury of both cold and hot water. Also, the invention of the "spoon-bowl" allowed a more normal eating experience of rehydrated food; a plastic zipper was opened and the food was removed with a spoon. The moisture content in the food allowed it to cling to the spoon. This particular spoon appears to have some particles of food still clinging to the underside of the bowl- possibly part of Lovell's last meal on board Apollo 13?This lot includes a signed Letter of Authenticity from Lovell on his letterhead stating: "I hereby certify that this spoon and plastic case was on board the Apollo 13 spacecraft. Apollo 13 perilous flight took off on April 11 and returned safely on April 17, 1970. This spoon and plastic case is from my personal collection of space artifacts and has been in my possession since the mission."
