Description
Civil War: Two 7th Ohio Infantry Rooster Badges. Each of similar design and size, 45 x 45 mm, pinback, no maker's marks, one example gilded-brass; the other with a more subdued patina. One of the only unit-specific badges worn during the Civil War, this proud "rooster" emblem was adopted unofficially by the 7th Ohio and worn on the coats and caps of many of its members. The 7th Ohio was created in June, 1861 and participated with the Army of the Potomac through Gettysburg after which it was transferred southward to fight with the Army of Ohio and Cumberland. It was mustered out in July 1864. "Only 240 able-bodied men remained to bring home their unsullied colors, pierced through by the shot and shell of more than a score of battles." A hard to find piece of Civil War insignia.
Condition: Excellent.
