Description

Thomas Custer et al: Charming Albumen Image.

Measuring at 9.875" x 7.875", this piece depicts a scene of a horse-pulled sleigh, numerous thick furs and blankets draped across the riders' laps. Featured on page 147 of The Custer Album: A Pictorial Biography of George A. Custer by Lawrence A. Frost, this image was taken somewhere in the Dakotas and captured an 1875 sleigh ride with Thomas Custer holding the reins, Agnes Wadsworth beside him, and W.W. Cooke in the rear seat. This photograph has expected wear and soiling with some light toning. An attractive overlay with a gold oval border frames the center of the photo. This overlay is pasted to the image's mount and has come unglued in areas. The old adhesive residue visible is a dark brown. The overlay is worn with multiple tears and some loss at the top edge. Two small tears are present at the bottom edge. Light scratching and a couple of inconsequential marks are on the image itself. The contrast of the albumen is still quite nice, and the scene exudes a cozy quality. Overall, this piece is in good condition. A similar unpublished image, very likely featuring Thomas Custer's famous older brother, George Armstrong Custer, is also offered in this sale as Lot 40081. The two would display together quite nicely. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
