Note: According to consignor, this gun was probably given to Sir John Lawrence as a gift. History shows, Sir John served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India from January 1864 to January 1869 among other interesting positions. Sir John was born in 1811 and died in 1879. One interesting role that Sir John played in 1857 could be an indication on how this gun became to bare his name on the backstrap. Research available online thru Wikipedia reads "that Lawrence was partly responsible for preventing the spread of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 to Punjab, and negotiated a treaty with the Afghan ruler Dost Mohammed Khan, and later led the troops which recaptured Delhi from the rebellious sepoys. For this, he was created a baronet and received an annual pension from the East India Company of 2000 pounds." This lot is being sold with consignor notes regarding research to this individual. We are selling this gun as purportedly belonging to this Sir John Lawrence and should be researched further if possible. Manufactured in 1853.

Condition: Very good as configured. Retaining approximately 90% Gold Damascene with small losses concentrating to cylinder and recoil shield with some pitting. Fine nicks and scratches to finish. Frontstrap and backstrap have been refinished at some point with evidence of pitting and tarnish. Inscription is a bit light to the touch, but completely visible. Grips with some losses to varnish, dings and mars throughout with small loss to right panel near butt. Case and accessories with moderate age wear, cartridge box appears to be incomplete, instructions on lid possible reproduction and some compartment dividers are a bit loose. Action good. Bore ok.
