Description

[Pope Sixtus V] Papal Bull. One page with docketing on the verso, 33" x 24", May 25, 1585, Rome, on vellum, in Latin. Although untranslated, the document appears to deal with the appointment of apostolic delegates. The document has some text weakness and small holes at the folds. The lead "bulla", or seal, and cords are missing, else fine.

More Information:

Pope Sixtus V's five year papacy that began on April 24, 1585, just one month before this document was written, was marked by bringing order to the ecclesiastical states and rebuilding the Church coffers. Immense sums were also spent upon public works.  The popes relations with European monarchs were often acrimonious. He renewed the excommunication of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and excommunicated Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV of France.
