Description
Fourth of July, 1776 Revolutionary War Receipt for One Ton of Iron. One page, 7.5" x 3.25", Ringwood, "4th July 1776". Partly printed form, a receipt for "78 [bars] of Iron... which I promise to deliver to E W Kiers." A docket at bottom indicates that the iron is "for Hallet the Chairmaker". During the Revolutionary War, Ringwood New Jersey was home to three major iron-making plantations, all under the management of Robert Erskine (George Washington's map maker). The iron was used for hardware such as camp ovens, tools, and in this instance, chairs, for the army. Accompanied by a handwritten note stating that: "E.W. Kiers was a quartermaster in the American Army and became a resident of Haverstraw where he had been stationed during the war..." Note is on lined paper and dates from the late 19th Century. Both sheets have pinholes at top left corner, where they were previously attached. Gently toned.Auction Info
