Description
Nice Group of Items Belonging to Henry B. Walker, 121st New York Infantry. Walker enlisted in the regiment 8/23/62 and was discharged 1/8/64. He was promoted to Sergt. Major 12/18/62 and 2nd Lieutenant 5/3/63. The 121st, during Walker's term of service was engaged at Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Va., where it lost 276 men killed wounded and missing, the greatest loss sustained by any regiment in the battle and where Walker was also wounded. The regiment was also present at Gettysburg and engaged at Rappahannock Station. The regiment lost 276 men killed and mortally wounded during its term of service. The group includes the following: Colt M1860 .44 caliber percussion revolver, serial #44,715, manufactured in mid 1862. Metal generally smooth and bray retaining about 50% of the cylinder scene. Mainspring broken else mechanically fine, excellent markings including military inspectors' initials. Grips excellent just showing honest wear and use.; Walker's non reg Staff/Foot officer's sword. Fluted bird head pommel and backstrap. Steel basket pierced with eagle and US.Grip excellent with wrap and wire. Blade also excellent with just some scattered stans and etched panels incorporating scrollwork along with eagle and fancy block US. Scabbard also excellent, smooth and gray just showing some honest use most notably on the drag. The sword is marked on one side of the ricasso "Iron Proof" and on the other "Walscheid / Solingen".; collapsible drinking cup in the original Japanned tin container, fine; 15 of Walker's uniform buttons and a compartmented case containing 9 Civil War projectiles, each identified by Walker. Also a wooden cylinder containing the balls that were removed from Walker's shoulder as a result of his wounding at Salem Church, Va. A period ink script label, in Walker's hand, is attached detailing the wound and removal of the projectiles. ; Walker's pocket bible with clasp closure, fine; a tin document box with key, stenciled with his name, which contains numerous photographs of walker and his family, a large number of documents including his commissions, letters including a Confederate letter dealing with the impressment of negroes, many of Walker's period letters as well as letters to him, a number of period maps and a journal/diary on ledger paper recounting Walker's wartime experiences, an account written by him about his wounding at Salem Church, Va., along with a number of other period documents along with a number of post war documents including his obituary etc. Really a fascinating group of paper. A nice Civil War grouping related to a gallant member of one of the hardest fought Union regiments of the war.Auction Info
