Description

A Nayarit Joined Couple

Nayarit
Ça 200 BC-200 AD
Slipped and painted ceramic

12¼" High x 11¾" Wide

Sculptures representing joined couples are very unusual in pre-Columbian America. The female figure is seated with her arm around the male. Both wear colorful costumes painted in textile patterns. The female figure, wearing a knee length skirt, is shown with her short legs curved back. The attached male figure plays a flute held in his left hand while he plays a drum with his right. Both wear hats with identical textile bands and identical large circular ear flares. The couple is in very good condition. Their colors have retained extraordinary brightness.
