Exceptional American Eaglehead Artillery Officer's Sword C. 1835 - 40. 31" slightly curved, quill back, blade, nearly identical to the M1833 dragoon, decorated for half its length with fire blue and gilt along with two white etched panels on each side. Decoration includes scroll work, arms panoplies and American shield. Retains 90% of the original blue and gilt with the undecorated portion retaining most of the original luster. Retains the original red wool washer. Hilt with six graduated balls on each side with large clamshell langets. Original brass chain guard with decorated rings where it attaches to the eagle's lower beak and the quillon. One piece profusely carved ivory grip, the exceptionally detailed eaglehead employing a back strap and decorated brass ferrule at the base of the grip. The exposed tang is covered with a brass rosette. Grip perfect with nice light patina with the brass retaining 95% of the original gilt. Leather scabbard with brass mounts retaining traces of the original gilt. Upper mount with a single ring and decorated frog stud. Middle mount also with a single carrying ring. Scabbard in excellent sound condition with just a few scuffs and an area with come minor flaking just above the lower mount. Beautiful sword and a scarce form.
