Description

An exceedingly rare Confederate sword

Confederate Foot Officer's Sword with the Absolutely Authentic "PRADEL, A / NEW. ORLEANS" Maker's Mark Deeply Stamped Horizontally on the Reverse Side of the Blade at the Base. Pradel was a French maker who came to New Orleans in 1849 and established himself as a surgical instrument maker at 68 St. Charles St. Pradel eventually partnered with his brother and moved, in 1861, to 121 Chartres St,. where he was listed as a maker of surgical instruments and is known to have made foot officers' swords with etched blades. Pradel is also known to have engaged in the production of swords for Alfred Dufilho. But a handful of signed specimens are extant or Pradel's work, this example being fresh to the market and previously unknown. Fashioned directly after the U.S. M1850, the sword exhibits good craftsmanship but the less than superb finish generally associated with Confederate swords. The rather slender grip wrapped with black leather and twisted brass wire. Grip and hilt both perfect and completely untouched/ uncleaned. The 29" blade utilizes a rather shallow unstopped fuller. Overall excellent with salt and peppering and some very minor edge nicks, the mark deeply and crisply stamped. There are clear vestiges of the original etching visible, most notably on the lower portion of the blade. The original black leather scabbard with brass mounts, having incised line decoration, else plain. Mounts are screw fastened and rather heavy. Mounts are about perfect with light patina, just missing the screw on the bottom mount. The back stitched black leather scabbard in excellent sound condition exhibiting rather crude shallow incised line decoration. Prov. Flayderman Collection.
