Description
The "New Nine"
NASA Astronaut Group Two: Photo Signed by Eight (Conrad
Autopen), with PSA/DNA LOA. A stunning and rare assemblage of
signatures on an 8" x 10" matte finish vintage B&W photo of the
"New Nine" or "Next Nine," the first new group of astronauts chosen
by NASA after the original "Mercury Seven." They are all in
business suits and gathered around a large rocket model with two of
the Mercury Seven group, John Glenn and Wally Schirra (who have not
signed). This was signed for a NASA employee, as follows: "Many
regards to/ Joe Fraselli/ Elliot See", "To Joe/ Best
Regards/ Edward H White II", "Charles Conrad Jr."
(autopen), "Frank Borman", "Neil Armstrong",
"Thomas P Stafford", "John Young", "Best wishes/
James A McDivitt", and "Best regards/ James Lovell". The
Gemini Program had been announced and this second group was chosen
to face new and more technical challenges; four of the nine had
advanced engineering degrees. A rare and desirable photo. Included
with this lot is a full PSA/DNA Letter of Authenticity for all nine
signatures. The photo has wear in the margins, a barely-noticeable
crease down the right side, and, due to the dark suits, some of the
signatures exhibit low contrast. Very good overall.This is an amazing group of American heroes and includes the first man on the moon (three moonwalkers total), the first American to walk in space, the commander of the first mission to the moon, and the commander of the first shuttle mission. The "New Nine" signed very few items as a group due to their busy schedules and, as Eliot See died in an early-1966 training accident, none could be obtained after that.
