President Kennedy's Cabinet Meeting Notes Regarding Security in the Middle East

John F. Kennedy Autograph Notes. Two leaves (recto only), 12.25 x 7.75 inches (315 x 200 mm), no place; [July 23, 1963]. President Kennedy's autograph notes on to two leaves removed from a yellow legal pad, displaying his iconic scrawl and fast-moving mind. Though the notes seem somewhat disjointed at first, context reveals the details hidden among them. Written during President Kennedy's Cabinet meeting regarding security in the Middle East, held on July 23, 1963, the variables running through the President's mind start to become clear.

In particular, he references "China", "Israel", writes "Spain" no less than seven times, notes several options for offensives (several of them darkly scratched out), and twice references budget. Kennedy also references the "Inter-American Defense Board", an international committee of defense officials, and "[Curtis] LeMay", the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force and Kennedy's consistent rival in military and defense matters. The second page of notes contains a short list at the bottom which reads, "Nuclear free Africa / Inspections / Missiles". Accompanying Kennedy's notes is a small penciled date on the second leaf and a typed transcription, presumably by Evelyn Lincoln.

These notes were presumably taken around or during a meeting recorded on the same date which comprised discussions regarding possible Near East arms limitation agreements, specifically relations between UAR and Israel.

[Together with:] A Letter of Authenticity Signed by Evelyn Lincoln, Personal Secretary to President Kennedy. Issued on White House stationery, 9.25 x 6.25 inches (234 x 159 mm) and dated March 7, 1989. In part: "These handwritten notes...were written by President John F. Kennedy at a 4:40 pm meeting in the Cabinet Room on the Middle East on July 23, 1963."

Condition: Creased. Light scattered soiling. Top left corner clipped, just affecting text.
