Description

Samuel Vance Fulkerson Autograph Letter Signed "Saml. V. Fulkerson." One page, 8" x 7.75", Abington, Virginia; May 31, 1861. Orders reading in full, "Capt. Jones of the Washington Mounted Rifle Company, will proceed without delay with his company, arms and camp equipage to Richmond, taking a more expeditious mode of transportation than on horseback, if an opportunity presents itself on the way."

Samuel Vance Fulkerson (1822-1862) served in the 37th Virginia Infantry as a colonel. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gaines' Mill on June 27, 1862. General Stonewall Jackson was deeply affected by Fulkerson's death and named him as "an officer of distinguished worth."

Condition: Flattened mail folds and light spots of soiling. Minor chipping at the left edge.
