Description
Appomattox Parole Issued to Private John Brandon. 8" x 3", partially printed slip, Appomattox Court House, Virginia; April 10, 1865. A parole pass granting "Private J. Brandon of Co. C, 7th Regt. of SoCa Cavalry...permission to go to his home, and there remain undisturbed." The pass is signed "A C Haskell" by Alexander Cheves Haskell. Docketing present on verso. The 7th South Carolina Cavalry was organized in the spring of 1864 and served in General Henry Gray's Brigade. The unit saw action at Petersburg, New Market Heights, Sailor's Creek and Appomattox Court House, before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. At the surrender, it yielded 22 officers and 398 soldiers. Private Brandon's Company C was also known as the McKissick Rangers.The Army of Northern Virginia's defeated soldiers were allowed to return to their homes following General Lee's surrender on April 9, 1865. With ongoing hostilities in many areas of the South, these men were issued paroles that amounted to safe travel passes. Appomattox paroles remain the most desirable of all Civil War paroles.
Condition: While most Appomattox paroles are heavily stained and in pieces, this fine example is intact, with flattened folds and very light toning. Some separations and minor chipping at folds. Some soiling on the verso.
