A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY, ANNOTATED BY ONE OF THOREAU'S CLOSEST FRIENDS.

FIRST EDITION, BAL's binding A, with the spine lettered "Author of Excursions" (later states have "Author of Walden"). WILLIAM ELLERY CHANNING'S COPY, with his name "Channing" inscribed in pencil on title-page, his pencil notes on pp. 97 and 101, and on the two terminal blank leaves.

The poet William Ellery Channing was one of Thoreau's closest friends and the author of Thoreau: The Poet Naturalist (1873, and enlarged in 1902). He was the foremost Unitarian preacher in the United States in the early nineteenth century and, along with Andrews Norton, one of Unitarianism's leading theologians. Channing was known for his articulate and impassioned sermons and public speeches, and as a prominent thinker in the liberal theology of the day. His religion and thought were among the chief influences on the New England Transcendentalists although he never countenanced their views, which he saw as extreme.

The first of his notes on page 97 draws attention to the difference between a couplet [from Samuel Daniel] as quoted by Thoreau in a letter to H. G. O. Blake and the same couplet as quoted by Thoreau on page 400 of the first edition of A Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers. Finally on the two terminal blank leaves, Channing has noted a dozen items that interested him and given the page references.

Condition: Spine faded and worn at ends with a little fraying; upper joint splitting near head; corners a little worn; a little rubbed. Marginal dampstains throughout, crossing upper right portion of title and early leaves; tear in blank portion of a divisional title repaired; occasional spotting or foxing.

References: BAL 20116.

Provenance: William Ellery Channing (signature in pencil on title and his annotations); purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 19 November 1962. From the William A. Strutz Library.
