Description

Whaler's Powder Horn Dated 1830. Very distinctive and unusual 14" powder horn carved by whaler Peter Truax in 1830. The design elements include a schooner and three-mast ship both flying American flags, two whales, an eagle with shield encircled by a star-studded wreath and points of the compass. The wooden plug has a raised figure of a whale. There is cross-hatching at top & bottom, accented by abalone inlays. Mellow patina. An evocative relic from the days of New Bedford and Captain Ahab!

Condition: Fine.
