Description

Stolen Election of 1876: Electoral Commission Photo by Brady. 8" x 5 3/4" albumen (on 10" x 8" mount) of the "Electoral Commission" empowered to decide the results of the disputed "stolen" election of 1876. Brady of Washington credit. The group included future President James A. Garfield as well as Supreme Court justices. Voting along party lines, they decided in favor of Rutherford B. Hayes just two days before the March 4th inauguration date. Hayes, in turn, promised his Democratic rival that U. S. troops would be withdrawn from the Reconstruction South. One minor stain at top; else, excellent. The only example we have seen.
