WWII U.S. 48-Star Flag Flown Aboard the Captured German Submarine U-2513, From the Dr. Clarence Rungee Collection.Cotton, multipiece construction, printed stars, 3 x 5-feet. Everwear Bunting maker's logo on the hoist. Two brass grommets at each end. Written in ink on the hoist: "Used on U 2513 1944 German Sub Captured". The U-2513, a Type XXI submarine, never conducted war patrols. She was surrendered by Fregattenkapitan Erich Topp at Horten Naval Base, Norway. From there she was taken to Oslo, then to Lishally, Northern Ireland where she was transferred to the United States Navy. The U-boat was used for extensive evaluation tests. On November 21, 1946 President Harry S. Truman boarded the sub and was taken 440 feet below the surface for a demonstration of the German specialized snorkel. The sub was deliberately sunk by gunfire northwest of the Dry Tortugas in about 215 feet of water. The flag is accompanied by an inventory form from Dr. Rungee's Flag Heritage Foundation.
Condition: Very good.
