Description
Group of Seven National Guard of California Shooting Awards, Circa 1889-1902.All medals identical in form, with 28-mm planchets featuring the California bear and caption "NATIONAL GUARD OF CALIFORNIA EUREKA" on the obverse and captioned "AWARDED BY THE STATE TO" on the reverse. All examples sterling and maker marked Shreve & Co. Includes: 1) Ornate 1889 marksmanship award engraved to "LIEUT. / C. B. PRESSLEY" and numbered, suspended from a light-blue silk ribbon. The consigner indicates that this particular form was only used in 1889 and 1890. 2) Shooting award with a single bronze Marksman clasp, engraved to "R. H. Clement" and numbered 2799. 3) Shooting award with a single bronze Marksman clasp engraved to "Th. Hardy" and numbered 583. 4) Shooting award with a single silver Rifleman clasp dated 1895, engraved to "Wm. HALDERMAN / CO F / 8TH REG" and numbered 2926. 5) Shooting award with two bronze Marksmanship clasps dated 1895-96, engraved "F. W. REED / PORTERVILLE" and numbered 3325. 6) Shooting award with two 14k gold Distinguished Marksman clasps, two silver Sharpshooter clasps, a bronze Rifleman clasp and bronze Marksman clasp. Dates range from 1896 to 1902. Numbered 4165 which the consignor identifies to 2nd Lt. Benjamin C. Robinson of the 7th Infantry. 7) 5th Regiment shooting award with a silver 1901 Sharpshooter clasp and 14k gold 1902 Distinguished Marksman clasp. Numbered 518.
