Rare U.S. Model 1881 Indian Scout Enlisted Mans' Dress Helmet.

Black felt with patent leather trim. Gilt-brass Indian scout side buttons, front plate and plume base. The front plate has silver crossed arrows on the shield denoting Indian Scouts. The helmet is complete with red and white horsehair plume, lanyard cords and tassels. The inside of the leather liner is marked "Wm. H. HORSTMANN CO. / PHILADELPHIA / CONTRACT OF FEB. 10. 1882" and Quartermaster inspector and Depot marked. The inner base of the plume holder is marked "RAYMOLD & WHITLOCK" and "HORSTMANN BROS". The helmet retains the 2-inch wide brown sweatband. A particularly nice and complete example

Condition: Very good to excellent. Light wear with some moderate crazing and discoloration on the patent leather band, felt covering is a bit dusty.
