Samuel W. Crawford (1829-1892) was the surgeon on duty at Ft. Sumter during the Confederate bombardment, after which he changed careers and accepted a commission as a major in the 13th U. S. Infantry. He was severely wounded at Antietam, but returned in May 1863 to command the Pennsylvania Reserves Division. Crawford and his division, part of the V Army Corps, arrived at Gettysburg on July 2 and were engaged on the slopes of Little Round Top. Crawford remained in command of the Pennsylvania Reserves for the rest of the war and was brevetted major general on August 1, 1864.
