[Henry Clay]: Large and Important 1844 Native American Parade Flag. 52" x 28.5" cotton flag with hand-stitched hems inscribed, on the stripes, "Beware of Foreign Influence". The canton has an eagle, shield, draped flags, twenty-six stars and a ballot box captioned "Twenty-One Years". The latter slogan does not refer to the voting age requirement, but a proposal that immigrants needed to reside in the U.S. for twenty-one years before they could become naturalized citizens.
The Nativist or Native American movement was the precursor to the American or Know-Nothing Party. They were most prominent in Philadelphia, site of anti-immigrant violence. In the election of 1844, they supported the Whig candidate for President, Henry Clay. This flag is very similar in size and format to the large size Clay portrait flag we are offering in this sale.
Condition: Scattered splotches of soiling, strong colors. Fully intact.
