PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "To Sylvester Baxter from / A fellow truth seeker in art - fraternally, / Hamlin Garland." Baxter was a Massachusetts author who published his book The Cruise of a Land-Yacht the same year. Spine a little faded and rubbed, a few faint stains on rear cover; text evenly toned, some foxing to title and occasionally throughout, text block over-opened at center. - Garland. A Son of the Middle Border. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1917. 8vo, illustrated, original olive cloth, lettered and decorated in blue and gilt on upper cover and spine.
