X-15: Scott Crossfield Signed Cover Celebrating the First Ever X-15 Test Flight, Captive Beneath the Wing of a B-52 Bomber. A philatelic cover with an illustrated and informational cachet titled "First Captive Flight of X15/ March 11, 1959". The cover bears a 4ยข "Long May It Wave" flag stamp canceled March 11 at Edwards, California. Just beneath the stamp, the test pilot has signed in black ink: "Scott Crossfield". There is a large white label covering the address area. Please Note: The flight actually took place on March 10, 1959, not the 11th as the cachet and cancelation state. Still, a rare and desirable cover. Fine. Included, for purposes of display or matting, is a glossy colorized print of this flight in the air.
On March 10, 1959, North American Aviation test pilot A. Scott Crossfield conducted the first captive-carry flight of the X-15, remaining attached beneath a Boeing NB-52A Stratofortress. This initial flight tested the mechanical and aerodynamic integration between the X-15 and its mothership, ensuring systems compatibility and safe handling prior to free flights. The successful mission marked a pivotal step in the X-15 program, paving the way for subsequent glide and powered flights that would expand the frontiers of hypersonic and spaceflight research.
