John E. Wool Mexican War Dated Autograph Letter Signed Sending Orders to the Volunteers Garrisoned in Saltillo. One page of a bifolium, 5 x 8 inches, "Buena Vista / 1st Div 1847." A brief letter to "Captain Harper," in command of the Virginia and North Carolina Volunteers. In full:

"As the company which halted in Tower, Saltillo, will be ordered out, you will remove the tents if you have any belonging to that company for its use when it arrives." Signed, "John E Wool / U. S. A."

Although undated, this letter was likely sent in late February, soon after the U.S. victory at the Battle of Buena Vista. When General Taylor chose to defend at Buena Vista, he left behind a garrison in Saltillo to protect his supply depot, hospitals, and the Torreón (the stone tower). This detachment was vital because if Santa Anna flanked him, his entire army could be cut off. Wool here sends orders to troops, which were made up of U.S. volunteers, including Virginia and North Carolina. Per the historical record, these companies were ordered out in late February.

Together with an engraving of Wool engraved by J. C. Buttre, measuring 5 3/8 x 8 3/4 inches.

Condition: Lightly toned with flattened folds. Scattered soiling and ink smudging, not affecting legibility. Annotations on verso.
