[Republic of Texas]. Francis R. Lubbock Certificate Signed. One page, 6 3/4 x 3 1/8 inches, Houston, Texas; September 1, 1842. A "Consolidated Fund of Texas" certificate for $100, "No. 1498" made out to "H. C. Hudson." Signed by Francis R. Lubbock as Controller and William G. Cooke as Stock Commissioner. The Consolidated Fund of Texas was created by an act of the Texas Congress in June 1837, authorizing "the consolidation and funding of the public debt."

Francis Lubbock (1815-1905) was appointed by President Sam Houston as controller of the Texas Republic. He was serving as Governor of Texas at the outbreak of the Civil War. An avid supporter of the Confederacy, he worked to improve the state's military capabilities. After his term of office ended, Lubbock enlisted in the military, was appointed lieutenant colonel and served as assistant adjutant general on the staff of Maj. Gen. John Bankhead Magruder. Lubbock was eventually appointed aide-de-camp to Jefferson Davis. As an expert on the Trans-Mississippi Department, he provided Davis with detailed information on the war west of the Mississippi River. With the defeat of the South, Lubbock fled Richmond with Davis and was captured by federal authorities in Georgia.
