Texas Declaration Signer Charles Taylor Document Signed. One partially printed page (7 5/8 x 6 1/4 inches) affixed at bottom of the last page of a manuscript legal statement written in Spanish to an overall size of 7 5/8 x 17 1/4 inches. Nacogdoches; March 20, 1838. Charles Taylor, then serving as Chief Justice of Nacogdoches, signs to attest that "
Juan Mansola who being duly sworn, saith that he is acquainted with the signatures of Jose Ygnacio Ybarbo & Jose Pineda that he has seen them write, and that he believes the signatures to the annexed document to be genuine."
The partly printed form is annexed to the last page of a statement written in Spanish dated October 20, 1829, regarding a land transfer or dispute. There are multiple filing dockets on verso, including one referencing "
Guerrerro's Grant."
Charles Taylor (1808-1865) settled in Texas as a merchant in 1830. In 1835 he was appointed land commissioner. He played an active role in the Texas Revolution, signing the Declaration of Independence in 1836. Later that year, he was appointed Nacogdoches County's chief justice.
Condition: Heavy wear and dampstaining, with multiple separations and loss of paper affecting text. Rudimentary repairs adding archival tissue along side.
