Albert Gallatin. Map of the Indian Tribes of North America about 1600 A.D. along the Atlantic; & about 1800 A.D. westwardly. [Cambridge: American Antiquarian Society, 1836]. 17 x 17 inches. A hand-colored map showing the territories of eleven Native groups in North America. According to Rumsey, this map, "in addition to its abundant information regarding the Indian Tribes, shows [Jedediah] Smith's route of 1827 across the Great Basin, one of the earliest American maps to do so."

Originally published to accompany Albert Gallatin's Synopsis of the Indian Tribes of North America, this map stands among the earliest works of American ethnography. Gallatin, who had served as a U.S. Senator and as Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson, developed an interest in Native American cultures later in life. His research produced some of the first scholarly studies of Indigenous peoples in North America. In 1843, he co-founded the American Ethnological Society, and has since been called "the father of American ethnology."

Condition: Lightly toned and creased at folds. Small, closed tear near left margin. Light creasing near edges. Tape remnant on verso.

Reference: Rumsey 3388.
