This presentation copy of Sharp's account of the events of the Spirit Lake Massacre includes an autograph letter signed by Sharp, affixed (with adhesive) to the front pastedown. Dated April 28, 1908, Sharp writes to "
Mrs A. E. Camplin" about their shared relatives who were killed or taken captive:
"
Dear Friend I have rec'd your kind letter and will endeavor to state a few facts that may be of interest to you In the first place will say that my mother-in-laws maiden name was Sally Ashley sister to your aunt Sue also Mrs Howe who was killed at the time my family was by the Indians was also an Ashley. Mrs Noble my companion in captivity was a daughter of Mrs HoweMrs Thatcher the other captive her husband was a son of Phoebe Ashley-Thatcher I was personally acquainted with all these people and have written a book of the story of the massacre and give the names and all I know of interest about these people I am sure that you would be greately pleased with a copy of my book on the event of your realitives [
sic]
I was also acquainted with Mary Ann Heart another Sister of your aunt Sue. I will close hoping to hear from you again." Signed, "

Condition: Some wear to binding, including minor staining, scuffs and frayed edges; very small wormhole at rear joint. Inner pages somewhat toned; rear hinge cracked. Letter lightly toned and creased at center fold.
