Joseph Meyer and Carl Christian Franz Radefeld. Texas Nach den besten Quellen. Hildburghausen [Germany]: Bibliographisches Institut, 1846. 15 x 12 1/2 inches (sight), matted and framed to an overall size of 22 x 20 inches. Engraved map with hand-colored outlines. It was originally published in Meyer's
Grosser Zeitungs Atlas as No. 113, and illustrates Texas and most of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
Issued at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, the map depicts the vast territorial claims of the newly admitted State of Texas, which had been annexed by the Union on December 29, 1845. It features the locations of Indian Reservations in present-day Oklahoma and Kansas, as well as their populations, and delineates major migration routes such as the Santa Fe Trail. Texas was of great interest to Meyer's German audience. Large-scale German immigration to the region was already underway through the activities of the
Adelsverein and other colonization efforts, and between 1844 and 1847 more than 7,000 Germans arrived in Texas.
Condition: Not examined out frame. Light toning; else appears fine.
