Carl Flemming. Texas. Glogau [Poland]: Carl Flemming,
circa 1842. 13 1/2 x 17 inches (sight), matted and framed to an overall size of 22 x 26 inches. Hand-colored in outline, reliefs in hachure. This scarce German lithographic map of Texas, based on Arrowsmith's 1841 map, features thirty counties, outlined in color and listed in a table in the upper right corner. It names many early roads, towns, and forts, as well as the locations of several Native American tribes. An inset at lower left shows a plan of Galveston Bay, including soundings.
This was one of the most detailed maps depicting the Republic of Texas to appear in a commercial atlas when Flemming included it in his
Complete Universal Hand Atlas of Modern Geography (German title:
Vollständiger Universal-Handatlas der neueren Erdbeschreibung). Often called the "German Arrowsmith Map," it was issued during a peak in German interest in the Republic, following more than a decade of German immigration to the region. Flemming includes the erroneous statement printed on the original Arrowsmith map regarding the western arid region of Texas: "
this tract of Country explored by LeGrande in 1833 is naturally fertile, well wooded & with a fair proportion of water."
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Appears to be excellent, with only very minor soiling near the edges.
Reference: Day 1457.
