[Samuel Clemens] Mark Twain: Signed Portrait Dedicated to Dorothea Gilder. 9 1/4" x 13" (sight), of a stunning inscribed photographic portrait of Mark Twain seated with a book, with the imprint of Underwood & Underwood at the lower left, dated 1907. Twain's autograph inscription written across the upper and lower margins, reads: "
To Miss Dorothea Gilder, with the kindest regards of / Mark Twain / Jan. 14/08."
Dorothea Gilder was a favorite portrait subject of famed 19th-Century artist Cecilia Beaux, whose work is at multiple institutions including the Smithsonian. Her father, Richard Gilder, was the editor of
Century Illustrated Monthly, which published numerous works by Twain. Through this family connection, Dorothea became friends with Twain's daughter Clara Clemens, and the two maintained a longstanding correspondence.
A fine association piece, linking Twain to one of the most influential publishing families of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Condition: Not examined out of frame. Some creasing at the edges and a short tear in the lower left margin.
