Mary Todd Lincoln: Autograph Letter Signed to Isaac Newton Arnold. Two pages of a bifolium on mourning stationery, 4 1/4" x 6 1/4"; [Chicago, IL]; November 13, 1872. Lincoln writes Isaac Arnold, in full: "
Dr. Miner has just called, with the two papers-also he has left me a copy of something which he wrote and was published, I believe. I enclose it to you. I received a telegram from my son, last Saturday morning just as he was sailing from Liverpool." Signed at conclusion, "
Mary Lincoln." Ink notation on verso in unknown hand.
Isaac Newton Arnold (1813-1884), was a Chicago attorney, congressman, and one of Abraham Lincoln's closest friends and early biographers. Following Lincoln's assassination, Arnold remained in frequent correspondence with Mary Todd Lincoln and served as a trusted intermediary in matters relating to Lincoln scholarship, reminiscences, and posthumous publications.
Condition: Flattened folds with minor toning. Second leaf is reinforced along edges. Stray ink mark on verso.
