Abraham Lincoln: 1864 National Union Campaign Broadside. 30 1/2" x 45 1/2" [sight] matted and framed to an overall size of 37 1/4"" x 52 1/2". Vivid and highly graphic campaign broadside promoting the "National Union Ticket" of Abraham Lincoln for President and Andrew Johnson for Vice President. Printed in bold red and blue inks, the broadside features a striking woodcut of a waving American flag at center, flanked by patriotic verses, with the candidates' names displayed prominently directly below. The lower portion lists the slate of presidential electors. The printer's imprint (King & Baird, Printers, 607 Sansom Street, Philadelphia) appears along the bottom margin.
Lincoln ran in 1864 under the temporary National Union Party banner-a coalition of Republicans and pro-war Democrats-created to emphasize unity in the midst of the Civil War. His choice of Andrew Johnson, a Southern Unionist from Tennessee, was a deliberate effort to broaden the ticket's appeal and symbolize the possibility of reconciliation between North and South.
An extremely rare and desirable survivor, issued in multiple variations and sizes, both on linen and paper. This example is the largest format and most impressive. While other surviving examples are found lithographed on paper, this broadside is a bold letterpress printing, enhancing both its visual and historic significance. The combination of bold fonts, patriotic imagery, and critical wartime context makes this an outstanding display piece, emblematic of Lincoln's pivotal reelection and the determined effort to preserve the Union.
Condition: Mounted to board with expected toning, staining, fold lines, scattered foxing, minor abrasions and loss. Shows "good honest age", and has been professionally framed to museum quality standards. An impressive broadside.
