[Abraham Lincoln]: Invitation to Ride President Lincoln's Funeral Train. Partially printed heavy cardstock, 4 1/2" x 3 1/4"; Washington; April 20, 1865. Issued five days after the President's death by the War Department to Mr. L. L. Crounse to "accompany the remains of the late President, Abraham Lincoln from the City of Washington to Springfield, Illinois." Signed, "E. D. Townsend" as Assistant Adjutant General.

Lorenzo Livingston Crounse (1834-1909) was a prominent news correspondent who joined the New York Times at the outbreak of the Civil War, becoming their chief correspondent assigned to covering the Army of the Potomac. He was part of a small, influential cadre of reporters who operated in close proximity to Union forces and whose dispatches shaped public understanding of the war in real time. Only a select number of trusted journalists were issued passes permitting access to the funeral train, making surviving examples exceptionally rare.

Condition: Toned with minor foxing. Additional offset toning on verso with rubbing.
