17th Century Walloon Sword.

Measuring approximately 40 inches overall, this Walloon sword is fitted with a 34 1/2-inch double-edged blade featuring a prominent central median ridge extending the full length on each side. The blade is 1 1/2-inches at its widest point, well proportioned for both cut and thrust. Ricasso struck with a crescent emblem, likely an armorer's mark. The distinctive hounskull hilt displays the characteristic pierced shell guard with protective side rings, paired with straight quillons that swell gracefully at the tips. The grip is neatly wrapped in wire, leading to a flat, discoid shaped pommel finished with a button.

Please note: The hounskull (or "Walloon") hilt emerged in the mid-17th century and became particularly associated with Dutch and German broadswords. Its robust pierced guard and side rings provided excellent hand protection while retaining relatively light construction. Widely adopted across Europe, these swords bridged the gap between the heavy military broadsword and the more refined rapier, and are often grouped under the Dutch broadsword classification. Weight is 2.1 lbs.

Condition: Good. Showing age wear and a mottle gray patina overall with surface rust elements. Hilt with remnants of cleaning with moderate wear, some bumps and bruising. Wire tight. Marred and some bent elements.
